HUWS GRAY has made a big impact since opening in Birmingham – and they mean business.

A year on from purchasing the former Wheelers Timber and Builders’ Merchants in Erdington, the store is doing a roaring trade.

The site was previously owned by the Bromley family and has been a mainstay in the town for almost 100 years.

Three of them still work at the branch – brothers Nick, Pete and manager Rob – who says the investment and ethos of Huws Gray has already had a big impact on the community and trade partners.

Another plus point is that all 17 members of the Wheelers workforce are still employed at the Short Heath Road base, ensuring continuity for customers.

“It was a big decision for the family to sell the business after so many years, but Huws Gray was the right company to take it forward, and it was the right time,” said Rob, who has four children with wife Maddy.

“We still have the same values and the personal touch is as important as ever, but what has changed is the look of the store.

“The redevelopment is incredible inside and out; we have a new kitchen and bathroom showroom and a vast range of products from bricks to tiles, landscaping, roofing, paints, clothing and more.

“We were predominately a timber merchants so there are more lines available and the delivery service has grown with the addition of new vehicles.”

He added: “As well as changes on the surface, Huws Gray brought a lot of new ideas, it’s been a breath of fresh air and invaluable to have such a network of advice and expertise on hand to support us.

“This has enabled us to keep our loyal customers and welcome new ones, who are all very impressed with the direction and keen to see us do well.

“They can see the results and that Huws Gray is committed to making its mark in Birmingham – we mean business.”

Huws Gray now employs over 1,800 staff at more than 100 sites across the UK and is set to get even bigger in the years ahead.

Despite the Anglesey’s company’s rapid growth, managing director Terry Owen said they will never lose their core values.

“We acquired Wheelers in 2018 because it was a perfect fit for us to strengthen and expand our footprint in the UK,” said Mr Owen.

“It remains a branch at the heart of the community in Erdington, and I am delighted to see the redevelopment has been well-received and that every member of staff is still with us.

“Our employees and customers are at the heart of every decision we make. I am so proud this has been translated into growth and am excited about what the future will bring.”
